The Blue Palace in the Bo Kaap

Category Area Focus

The Bo Kaap region of Cape Town is world-famous for its rainbow array of brightly-coloured houses, frequently photographed by tourists and locals alike.

It's especially exciting, then, when one as magnificent as the aptly-named 'Blue Palace' comes onto the market.

This jewel of a home is a national monument established on a farm that dates back to the 1700s. It boasts sweeping views of Table Mountain that one might soak in from the expansive wood terrace. As you watch the sky change colour in a technicolour display, so too does the area engulf your other senses. Breathe in the scent of fragrant curries made from recipes passed down for centuries, listen as the old mosque calls its worshipers to prayer, and feel enveloped by the warmth of neighbours who stop for chats as they pass by.

Inside, the Blue Palace has been sensitively renovated with all work done by local artisans and craftsman, while the decor pays homage to the Bo Kaap's Middle Eastern heritage. Antique fittings add character, and jewel tones and textures abound.

Upstairs, one finds a spacious, one-bedroom apartment, fitted with a galley kitchen, large living area, and a huge, partially covered deck - perfect for whiling away summer evenings overlooking the Mother City.

There are two large en-suite bedrooms downstairs, each with its own unique character, as well as a sitting room with a cozy fireplace for wintery evenings. The sizeable kitchen opens up to a sunny courtyard, where one might enjoy peace and solitude before heading down the cobbled walkway to bustling Bree Street (a 5-minute walk).

The front garden has been professionally done with indigenous shrubs and trees, as well as flowers that bloom all year round. Especially lovely is the 100-year oak tree that stands sentinel. It, like the Blue Palace eagerly awaits a new owner - one eager to soak up a sunset or two in a home that's anything but ordinary.
