Seeff Cares Sponsors Pristine Pathways New Seapoint Litter Nets

Category Seeff Cares

The Sea Point beachfront and promenade are lived on and loved by locals and tourists alike. But as with many high-traffic areas, it's not immune to the effects of litter and crime.

As a last line of defence for our oceans, Pristine Pathways have installed the first litter nets on our stormwater drains. Seeff Cares - the social upliftment arm of Seeff Atlantic Seaboard & City Bowl - is a proud sponsor of this innovative and inclusive solution.

The Pristine Pathways program was started by the Pristine Earth Collective - an NGO to ensure that zero plastic goes into South African oceans and landfills by 2025.

Working with stakeholders like the City of Cape Town and private businesses, they have launched a series of pilot initiatives across the Western Cape to keep identified at-risk areas free from litter, while providing employment.

The Sea Point Pristine Pathways project is a 3-month pilot involving the installation of litter nets on strategic stormwater drains along the Seapoint coastline as identified through consultations with the City of Cape Town. The Shark Spotters successfully crafted and installed the litter nets on 8 stormwater outflows across the Sea Point promenade on 16 August 2022.

In this short time, the team has intercepted a significant amount of litter via the nets and cleaned a lot from the beaches (126 bags in total!).

Meet Phakamisa and Alakhe: Stewards of Sea Point's beaches

Phakamisa and Alakhe are enthusiastic about keeping litter off Sea Point's beaches. Not only will they be clearing and maintaining the nets, but they will also clean the beaches between the nets. This is vital since a great portion of waste on the beaches is washed up by storm surges or blown onto the beaches by the south-easter.

This project uses an inclusive employment model whereby the team work to keep the beaches clean four days a week and the critical reciprocity aspect is that they then clean in their area (Gugulethu) one day of the week. The waste collected is recycled as much as possible and the remainder is processed by City.

Next time you see Phakamisa and Alakhe working on the beaches, take a moment to say hello and thank you.

Beach cleanup held on Saturday, 17 September

As part of World Clean Up Day and as an official launch to the public, Pristine Pathways hosted a beach clean-up in Sea Point this past Saturday (17 September). Everyone was welcome! It was a great turnout with us all chipping in and doing our bit to make our beaches cleaner.

We're thrilled to be involved with such a worthwhile initiative and are committed to the success of such a long-awaited project.
