SHOWING AREA PROFILE 1 OF 1

Zonnebloem at a glance

Zonnebloem is a number of things: it is a suburb steeped in the history of our country and its struggle; it is a picturesque precinct in Cape Town's City Bowl and it is a fabulous place to own property - whether you're looking for your next home or investment. With chic apartments and character-filled free-standing homes, there's truly something for everyone.

A brief history of the area

Zonnebloem was a farming estate until the early 19th century when it became a suburb of Cape Town as the population and city boundaries grew. During apartheid, the area of District Six was declared a white-only area and the previous residents (a mix of freed slaves, migrants and artisans) were forcefully evicted under the Group Areas Act of the apartheid regime. Today, this Cape Town suburb is home to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and a few police housing units - as well as some beautiful, character-filled Victorian properties in high demand. It is close to the City Bowl with all of its galleries, boutiques, markets, corporate giants, salons, restaurants and entertainment facilities.

Climate

As with most spots in the city, Zonnebloem (Dutch for sunflower) benefits from a mild sunny climate, with patches of wind. It was chosen as farming land for its location so residents can be assured of its easy (if only slightly breezy) atmosphere.

Schools in the area

Numerous schools are found within an exceptionally short distance: Rahmaniyeh Mos Primary, Zonnebloem Boys Primary, Mountain Road Primary School, Zonnebloem Girls' Primary, Chapel Street Primary School, Harold Cressy High School, Cape Town High School and Gardens Commercial High School.
At a tertiary level, the following facilities are all conveniently located: UNISA, University of Cape Town - Hiddingh Campus. The Cape Peninsula University of Technology even houses its main campus in Zonnebloem.

Healthcare in the area

The Mediclinic Cape Town can be found in neighbouring Oranjezicht. The medical facilities supplied by Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital are located in Foreshore. GP practices, dentists and other medical services are located nearby.

Shopping centres

Shopping facilities nearby include the mixed-use Wembley Square as well as The Gardens Centre. Whilst the premier shopping destination of the city, the V&A Waterfront is a short distance away. The City Bowls' myriad restaurant and entertainment options are found on Zonnebloem's doorstep.
Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)
It takes around 21 minutes to travel from Cape Town Airport to Zonnebloem, while the CBD is adjacent.

Restaurants

Vibey bagel stops, french crepes, delis, ramen and much more. The fare in Zonnebloem is exciting young and varied, with a few old faithfuls and an array of newer stops. Head to Dias tavern for Portuguese fair, New York Bagels in the morning, Swan cafe for the best galettes and sweet crepes and Downtown Ramen for your noodle fix.

Special Attractions

Cape Town's East City houses the District Six Musem, the Castle of Good Hope and City hall, as well as the Al Azhar Mosque. There is a lot of history to absorb, but Long Street and Kloof Street are also nearby and full to the brim with exciting things to do and see.
Make Zoonebloem your home. Let it be your story.

Zonnebloem is experiencing a phase of urban renewal with new developments and building revamps becoming increasingly prevalent resulting in prices steadily increasing. It's a vibrant, historic area ideal for first-time buyers, or those wishing to invest in the expanding pulse of the city.
