Vredehoek at a glance

Vredehoek lies just outside the city centre on the lower slopes of Devil's Peak, in the shadow of three round towers that dominate the horizon. It is a relatively quiet suburb, popular with younger buyers, though families call it home too. Working in the city and living in Vredehoek, is one of the most popular combinations for Capetonians and the established suburb has become one of the most sought after, with many renovated cottages and art deco flats snapped up in the property boom. Staying in Vredehoek offers spectacular views of the city and harbour.
A brief history of the area
Vredehoek suburb was proclaimed after the first world war and immigrants from many European countries settled here after peace was declared. It makes sense then that the directly translated, the name of the suburb means 'peace corner'.
Climate
The suburb gets the full force of the Cape Doctor wind, which can add some comedy to daily living in the summer months. However, the wind keeps the property prices a bit lower than the rest of the city bowl so that's a good thing for those concerned about price points.

Schools in the area
In terms of Vredehoek schools, Herzlia High School has a fine campus with great views on Deerpark Drive, St Cyprians is just over the border into Oranjezicht and there are several small pre-schools.
Healthcare in the area
The nearest hospital is the Mediclinic in Gardens, though the Netcare in the Foreshore isn't far away. Vredehoek has plenty of affordable family GPs and other healthcare practitioners.
Shopping centres
Gardens Centre shopping mall makes stocking up easy, while Vredehoek is also close to Kloof Street and Long Street.

Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)
Vredehoek is just 18km from the Cape Town airport and around 5-10 minutes driving from the CBD.

Restaurants
Cafe culture is what makes Vredehoek special, and there are some firm favourites to choose from. Woodlands Eatery makes a mean bowl of pasta and famous lamb pizza, and Bao Down for baos is a must! The Red Sofa Cafe is a wonderful coffee and lunch spot while Carlyle's on Derry is another cozy favourite.

Special attractions
The big draw for many is Vredehoek's proximity to mountain trails. It's only a short uphill walk to access a number of hiking and mountain biking trails, either up around Devil's Peak and to the block house, or starting from the Deer Park, where there's a lovely shady picnic area and trails, both easy and challenging, for leisurely dog walkers and serious hikers. The proximity to town is also a big factor. The Company Gardens, The National Art Gallery, Museum and Houses of Parliament are all within walking distance, and the Table Mountain cableway is only 10 minutes' drive from Vredehoek.
