58 Fun - and Safe - Things to Do During Lockdown: No Electricity Required

Category News

Here are 58 ways to enjoy the new eased lockdown rules (basking in the sun on a beach? Yes, please!) while still staying safe. And because 2020 taught us to expect the unexpected, everything on this list is load shedding-friendly. You know, just in case load shedding isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Don't forget to show us how you're making lemonade out of lockdown and load shedding using #LockdownLoadShedding 🍋🥤😋

1. Let's Go to the (Secret) Beach

The first thing on our list, along with the rest of Cape Town, is to feel the sand between our toes. But because crowds are so 2019, we're avoiding the Clifton beaches in favour of these lesser-known pieces of heaven:

Beta Beach, Bakhoven

This lovely little beach, nestled between Camps Bay and the wild Nature Reserve, is very quiet during the week. It even has its own Facebook page.

Buffels Beach, Cape Point Nature Reserve

Perfect for families with small children, Buffels Bay boasts braai facilities, a large lawn perfect for picnicking and a tidal pool for safer swimming.

Platboom Beach, Cape Point Nature Reserve

Calling all birdwatchers: the wild and unspoilt Platboom Beach is a bird's paradise, so don't forget your binoculars.

Smitswinkel Bay, False Bay

The only way you can get to this secluded beach is by way of a steep 20-minute walk down (and back up again). But that's part of it's charm! Don't believe us? Here's a love letter to Smitswinkelbaai.

Water's Edge, Simon's Town

Don't be fooled by the gate at the entrance to Water's Edge. The hidden cove may look like a private beach, but it's 100% open to the public! Spend the day jumping off the boulders into the water and getting up close and personal with galaxies of starfish (aka the collective noun for a group of starfish). And do it all in peace and quiet.

2. Fitness Is Our Focus

These incredible hiking trails offer beautiful views, without the crowds. Here they are, in order of difficulty (from low to high):

Lion's Head Loop

Coming in at just over 5 km, Lion's Head Loop is perfect for beginners. And it's beautiful too, surrounded by pine trees and proteas.

Devil's Peak

Devil's Peak may sound ominous, but the panoramic view of the city is anything but. The hike can be long or short, depending on which route you take.

India Venster

India Venster comes with a warning - not for acrophobics (aka someone who has a fear of heights). If you're wondering why it's called India Venster, just wait until you see the window-framed view of the mountain.

3. Braai Recipes, but Make It Vegan

After breaking a sweat at the beach or on a hike, it's time to fire up the (meat-free) braai. Because, it's cool to be kind.

Mushroom Kebabs on the Braai

Mushrooms have a meaty texture that makes them perfect for the braai. Serve these mushroom kebabs with toasted flatbread. Get the recipe.

Chargrilled Aubergines

Aubergine can do anything meat can do, and this recipe for chargrilled aubergines is proof! Get the recipe.

Vegan Potato Salad

No braai is complete without potato salad. This veganised version requires just 10 ingredients. Get the recipe.

4. Outdoor Movie Night at Home under the Stars

Step 1. Download a movie to a USB stick
Step 2. Make sure your laptop (and Bluetooth speaker if you're using one) is fully charged
Step 3. Create a cosy space to snuggle up outside
Step 4. Press play and wonder why you don't do this more often!
