Oranjezicht at a glance
Oranjezicht is known as an area that is on trend and extremely picturesque. It lies on the lower slopes of Table Mountain in close proximity to many of the great amenities that Cape Town has to offer.
The Oranjezicht story begins back in 1708, when a Swiss immigrant named Nicolaus Laubscher purchased land to farm at the base of the mountain, and named it "Oranjezicht" in honour of the spectacular views of the Oranje (Orange) bastion of the Castle of Good Hope. Following Laubscher's death, the land continued to be farmed for more than 200 years. The old slave bell from bygone days can still be seen in Oranjezicht today, as can some of the farm buildings. The site now occupied by Oranjezicht City Farm is where the original farmhouse lay. Oranjezicht is a suburb for artistic and creative types to fall in love with. Come and explore some of the magnificent homes on offer in this area of Cape Town.
A brief history of the area
The suburb is built on the site of the old Oranjezicht farm, which used to stretch as far as the Company's Gardens and supplied the Castle of Good Hope with fresh produce. It was operated as a farm from the arrival of the first owner Peter van Breda in Cape Town in the early 18th century until over 200 years later. The Oranjezicht farmhouse was on the property directly to the east of what is now a public park and playground. Some of the buildings of the farm as well as the old slave bell are still at the location where the farm once stood.
Climate
Oranjezicht, as with most other Cape Town suburbs, benefits from sunny days as it is located on the slopes of Table Mountain. In summer, temperatures reach about 30 degrees C, perfect weather for exploring the close by beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton. It can be slightly windier than other seaside suburbs, but is delightfully green and full of exciting parks and footpath walks to explore.
Schools in the area
There are schools aplenty in and around Oranjezicht. St Cyprians is the preferred choice for girls, while the Stepping Stones Montessori schools are also popular. The German School, as well as Tamboerskloof, are also solid options.
Healthcare in the area
The Mediclinic is in the immediate Oranjezicht area, with the Netcare hospital just further afield.
Shopping centres
Oranjezicht borders the popular Kloof Street, where you can find the Lifestyle on Kloof shopping centre. It also borders the Gardens area where you'll find the larger Gardens Shopping Centre.
Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)
Oranjezicht is around 25-30 minutes from Cape Town Airport and 5 minutes from the CBD.
Restaurants
Bootlegger is Oranjezicht's main coffee shop, while those in search of more substantial fare would head to Gardens or Vredehoek. Woodlands Eatery does wonderful pizza, and in Kloof Street, Carne makes for a meat-eaters dream. Nourish'd is wonderful for healthy eaters, and The Black Sheep is a popular all-around bistro.
Special attractions
Kloof Street, and the vibey restaurant and café culture, is within walking distance of Oranjezicht. Getting into the city centre is a mere five minutes and you're in the heart of bohemian Long Street, surrounded by buildings rich in history, restaurants, bistros and cafés, and various museums and galleries that will keep you entertained for the better part of two days.
It's only 10 minutes drive from Oranjezicht to the Table Mountain cableway, just off Kloof Nek, and over the other side of the mountain are the Cape Town beaches of the Atlantic Ocean - Camps Bay and Clifton - that offer fantastic swimming and sunbathing opportunities.
