Mouille Point at a glance

Mouille Point at a glance

Mouille Point is a small, affluent suburb of Cape Town, situated between the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and Granger Bay to the east, Green Point to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west. It hugs the coastline and is dominated by high-end apartment blocks. It boasts glorious sea views, the seaside atmosphere of the promenade and easy proximity to the V&A Waterfront and CBD. It's no wonder then that apartments are snapped up by savvy buyers and renters.

A brief history of the area

The name "Mouille" comes from the French word for an anchoring ground. In the early 1700s, ships were often swept ashore in Table Bay and the then governor decided that a breakwater (mouille in French) was needed to protect vessels at anchor. Work began in 1743. All farmers who delivered their goods to the city were required to load up their wagons with stones, drive out to Mouille Point and offload. Slaves and convicts were used to build the breakwater but after three years of labour and high seas, just 100m had been built and the project was abandoned. In 1781 the French arrived and built a battery near the unfinished mouille, naming it Mouille Point Battery. Mouille Point even had its own lighthouse (not to be confused by the Green Point Lighthouse) but it was demolished due it's confusing nature.

Climate

Mouille Point generally has a mild, warm climate, that people flock to in order to enjoy a promenade stroll before nipping into one of the many cafes. It's less windy than other parts of Cape Town, and the sunsets and sunrises are breathtaking to behold. In winter, the fierce storms that lash the promenade make for some Insta-worthy photos.

Schools in the area

Mouille Point is too small to have its own schools, but because of its central location, it has access to the schools in Sea Point, Green Point and Camps Bay. Reddam, Sea Point Primary, Camps Bay, and the French School are all wonderful options.

Healthcare in the area

New Somerset Hospital and the Sea Point Medical Centre are both close by and the Christiaan Barnard Hospital is 10 minutes away in the Cape Town CBD.

Shopping centres

The V&A Waterfront can be reached in under 5 minutes, the plethora of shops in Sea Point are 5-10 minutes away. Newport Deli also stocks a variety of grocery and takeaway basics.

Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)

Mouille Point is just 25 minutes from the Airport, and 5 minutes from the CBD.

The Butcher Shop and Grill offers a steak dinner to remember, while The Creamery is a boutique ice-cream store always worth a visit.
