Green Point at a glance

Green Point is an upmarket and trendy neighbourhood of Cape Town, located to the north west of the central business district. It is a popular residential area for young professionals. Many new mid-rise apartment and mixed-use developments have gone up in recent years - most of which have lovely views. It's close to Mouille Point, the Cape Town Stadium, as well as the Greenpoint park, which draws an active crowd. The delis, restaurants (many of which are institutions) and hub of activity gives it a lively feel.

A brief history of the area

The suburb of Green Point developed into an elegant community in the 1800s. As Green Point lies in such close proximity to Cape Town City Centre, it was initially used by the Dutch as a cattle grazing station during the 17th century. When the British annexed the Cape in the 1800s, they used the land as a social centre, hosting horse races and other events in the area. The construction of the now-iconic Green Point Lighthouse commenced in 1820, and was the first of its kind in South Africa. During the War of 1899, Green Point was used as a military base for an encampment of a large number of British troops, as well as a camp for Boer prisoners of war. Some of the memorabilia still stands, at the foot of the Cape Town Stadium, known as the Wynberg Military Base. Greenpoint eventually became an affluent suburb in the 1950s.

Climate

Greenppoint's climate is a bit milder than that of central Cape Town. The wind isn't quite as much in summer, and it is also a bit warmer in winter. Saying that, Greenpoint still shares the warm summer and cool, rainy winters that abound in Cape Town.

Schools in the area

Reddam House is a beautiful private school in the heart of Greenpoint. Other popular schools include CBC, Nutwood Forest, and the nearby Seapoint primary and high schools.

Healthcare in the area

Greenpoint is very close to the Netcare hospital in Cape Town. There are also plenty of pharmacies on Somerset Road, as well as doctors, based in the Greenpoint Health Centre, and aesthetic practitioners.

Shopping centres

Greenpoint has a couple of quant delis like Giovannis for groceries and basics, as well as a Woolworths on Somerset Road.

Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)

Greenpoint is 20-25 minutes from the Cape Town Airport and about 5-10 minutes from the CBD, depending on traffic.

Restaurants

From quaint delis to Mexican favourites, and a variety of coffee shops, the Somerset Road strip in Greenpoint is a great hub of eateries in Cape Town. Head to Bootlegger Coffee Company for an early morning flat white, or the famous Giovannis for takeaways and the best selection of deli produce you could ever hope to find. Top up on quality meet at The Butcher Man, or tuck into health food at Nu. When evening comes, head to El Burro for some authentically awesome Mexican cuisine, or the easygoing Manos - a Greenpoint institution.

Special attractions

The Cape Town Stadium was constructed on Green Point Common for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Numerous infrastructural developments were made, with the upgrade to Helen Suzman Boulevard and the new Granger Bay Boulevard being constructed, along with a massive investment in creating an urban park around the stadium. Of course, there is also the Green Point Lighthouse which is the oldest operating lighthouse in South Africa! On Saturdays, residents enjoy the Greenpoint park run before heading to the Granger Bay market for a bit of shopping and a bite.
