Bakoven at a glance

Bakoven is an intimate suburb in Cape Town situated between the residential areas of Camps Bay and Llandudno. It's sun-baked (hence its name meaning 'baking oven'), secluded, sea-spayed and right on the water's edge, making it popular with those who prefer a little more privacy but still want access to the glamour of Camps Bay and Clifton. It is surrounded by a fynbos nature reserve and has the backdrop of the Twelve Apostles range in Table Mountain making it a sought-after suburb by locals and foreigners alike.

A brief history of the area

Bakoven's name is Dutch in origin and is said to have hailed from an unusually shaped rock it looks over. It dates back to the early 1800s, with a tight-knit community of descendants from the original owners of the small bungalows. There are three beaches in Bakoven, namely Beta Beach, where the NSRI is stationed, Little Beach, and Tiny Beach. Beta Beach was originally a fishing harbour, being one of the few reasonably protected inlets near the city. Fishing shacks were erected above the high water mark all along the beach - with some great photographs to prove it. Predating European settlers are the Khoi San people who have also combed the famed beaches and are the original people of the Cape.

Climate

The climate in Bakoven is something special and the beaches are understandably protected by locals. The big boulders and white sands make it a superb haven for sundowners, and its little coves protect it from the wind that can be a little more aggressive in the surrounding Camps Bay area.

Schools in the area

Camps Bay Primary School and High School are just 5 minutes down the road for Bakoven residents.

Sea Point Primary and High Schools, Reddam House, The German School in Tamboerskloof are other nearby schools within a 20km radius, while schools.

Healthcare in the area

The Sea Point Medical Centre, Cape Town Mediclinic and New Somerset Hospital are all close at hand. Christian Barnard Hospital is also easily accessible in the CBD and the community is also serviced by the Camps Bay Medics - locally volunteered medics.

There are a multitude of specialists and general practices in Sea Point Main Road including General Practitioners, Chiropractors, Paediatricians, Aesthetic Medical Practitioners, and more.

Shopping centres

While Bakoven itself doesn't play host to any shops (a part of its charm), the Woolworths, Pick n Pay, and other smaller grocers are accessible on the Camps Bay strip, just a short walk or drive away. Bakoven is also just a 10-minute drive from the world-famous V&A waterfront Mall, where one might find anything from groceries, to a cinema, to high-end as well as everyday fashion outlets. The bustling Sea Point Main Road is also great for butchers, local fisheries, hidden gems, and independent health shops.

Distance from key points (Airports/CBD)

Bakoven is about 15 minutes from the Cape Town CBD, 45 minutes from Cape Town International Airport, and also marks the start of the coastal road which winds its way to Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak - an iconic drive if ever there was one in Cape Town.

Restaurants

Bakoven has a quaint coffee shop called Bootleggers that cyclists and runners stop in on daily. Camps Bay strip has an array of dining options from steak to seafood, BBQ, smoothie and health cafes, and everything in-between. The dining hub of the CBD is just a 10-minute drive away so residents are spoiled for choice.

Special attractions

Bakoven's main attractions are its pristine and protected beaches, so typically one would enjoy a full day of swimming and lounging followed by sunset drinks. However, with Table Mountain just a stone's throw away and plenty of trails that lead up from Camps Bay, one could spend the day hiking, mountain biking, walking, and exploring nature. Or, hit the busy Camps Bay strip, join in on some beach volleyball or take a dip in the tidal pools.
