Sea Point at a glance
Ocean-facing Sea Point is a lively suburb where beaches like Milton and Saunder's Rock feature tidal pools and sunset views. The Sea Point beachfront, or Promenade as it is more affectionately known, consists of a rambling walkway and large grass verge. It draws locals and visitors who enjoy walking, jogging, roller-skating or roller-blading, or just people-watching, especially in the early mornings or late afternoons, for those who want to watch the sun set next to the waters of the Atlantic Seaboard.The Promenade is lined with grand luxurious apartment blocks - perfect accommodation for the entire family. There are also a number of children's parks running alongside the Promenade and a chlorinated sea water swimming pool at the famous Pavilion. It is situated close to all amenities including restaurants, banks, shops and places of worship and attracts the young, trendy and those with small families.
A brief history of the area
Sea Point was so named in 1776 when Sam Wallis, one of the commanders serving under Captain Cook, encamped his men there in order to avoid a smallpox epidemic, which was sweeping through Cape Town at the time.
A short period prior to this, a small society house owned by a local men's club was established on the Sea Point slopes of Signal Hill, and provided a place of entertainment for European men, many of whom were free burghers or officials from the Dutch East India Company, and some of whom were slave-owners.
Ships entering the harbour in Table Bay from the east coast of Africa rounded the coast at Sea Point and over the years many of them have been wrecked on the reefs just off-shore.
The area began to develop as a residential suburb for European settlers in the early 1800s, and in 1839 was joined into one municipality with neighbouring Green Point. By 1813, 28 plots were sold for development on the lower slopes of Signal Hill.
In 1926, the Green and Sea Point Hebrew Congregation was established, and Sea Point's Jewish population grew dramatically. Today, Sea Point has at least three places of worship for Jewish community members.
Climate
Sea Point has a warm, sunny and relatively wind-free summer, with balmy days and beautiful sunsets throughout the year. The winter is cold, as per Cape Town's Mediterranean climate but slightly more moderate compared to Cape Town central and the Southern Suburbs.

Schools in the area include Sea Point Primary School and Sea Point High School and Herzlia Weizmann Primary. The French School of Cape Town is in Sea Point. Camps Bay Primary and High School, as well as Reddam, are also readily accessible.
Healthcare in the area
Sea Point is home to a wealth of GPs and healthcare practitioners that can be found in and around the main road. For hospital care, one can head to the Somerset West Hospital or the Netcare in town.
Shopping centres
The Point Shopping Mall, the Piazza Da Luz as well as the Artem Centre are all conveniently located on the central regent road and provide grocery shopping options, as well as boutiques, cafes and restaurants in spades. Clothing boutiques also dot Regent and Main road, while the V&A Waterfront is also just a few short minutes away.

Sea Point is around 25-30 minutes from Cape Town Airport and just 5-10 minutes from the CBD.

There are so many delightful restaurants to choose from in Sea Point that offer everything from gourmet gelato to sushi and everything in between. Head to La Mouette or the Duchess of Wisbeach for relaxed fine dining, Three Wise Monkeys for Poke and Ramen, NV-80 for the best steaks in the burb, Scheckter's Raw for a health kick and Moro Gelato for the famed peanut butter sorbet. Coffee shops too abound, with a few Bootleggers as well as the famous Kleinskys (the best bagels in town) both firm favourites.
Special attractions
The Sea Point promenade is the iconic path that runs from Green Point to Bakoven. Halfway there is the Sea Point Pool, an Olympic-sized pool, with two smaller pools, a kiddies' pool (all filled with the freshwater of the sea), and diving boards. The pool complex is open every day from 07h00 to 19h00.
The trendy, fun beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton are a short drive from Sea Point and are musts on balmy summer days in the Cape.
Sandy beaches like Milton and Saunders Rock feature tidal pools, kids' playgrounds and sunset views. Tracing the coastline, Sea Point Promenade is a popular walking route. Heading inland, there are abundant sushi bars, fast-food eateries and pizzerias. African handicrafts, craft coffee and live music are among the draws at the colourful Mojo Market.
